Research Innovation

As patients embark on a cancer journey, they expect more treatment options, better outcomes with less toxicity, and attention to quality of life. We want to ensure that our patients benefit from new discoveries and clinical trials. This is why we have invested in the Corwell Health Oncology Institute of Research, led by Dr. Matthew Steensma. For motivated physician-scientists who want to be at the cutting edge of translational or clinical research, we offer financial and programmatic support through the Lane Clinical Scholars Program.

Philanthropic Support

Many of our cancer centers at Corewell Health have been made possibly by generous donors who believe in the vision of Corewell Health.  Looking around, you’ll see how the community is invested in ensuring that patients have access to the most amazing care.

The Wellness Center at the Crane Haven Cancer Center in Ludington and the Susan P. Wheatlake Cancer Center in Reed City were made possible by the philanthropic donations of the Mortensen and Wheatlake families.

Furthermore, a 4.2-million-dollar donation from the Braman family supported the construction of Greenville’s new WH Braman Cancer Center.

Graduate Medical Education

Teaching and interacting with medical students, residents, and fellows is a rich and rewarding part of our practice experience. We’re excited to take part in training the next generation of oncology and hematology physicians through our innovative residency and fellowship programs. Corewell Health has a longstanding tradition of graduate medical education. We pride ourselves in the number of learners who choose to stay and practice in the area because of the positive experience they had during training.

Our Subspecialties

The GI and Cutaneous Malignancy section provides cutting-edge treatment options for patients with both conventional and advanced cancers. In addition to a full spectrum of complex surgical oncology procedures, patients with unresectable colorectal cancer and cholangiocarcinoma may be candidates for hepatic arterial infusion pump (HAIP) therapy. Patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis have access to heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC). For patients with borderline resectable or locally advanced pancreatic cancer, surgery is performed utilizing NanoKnife technology when appropriate. The section maintains a strong commitment to research and education through close collaboration with Michigan State University medical students and the Corewell Health General Surgery Residency Program.

Our Comprehensive Breast Surgery Program offers comprehensive care for patients with breast cancer, benign breast disease, high-risk breast conditions, and gender-affirming chest masculinization surgery. Services include breast oncologic surgery, oncoplastic techniques, aesthetic flat closure, prophylactic surgery, and coordinated breast reconstruction with immediate and delayed options. The addition of two fellowship-trained plastic microsurgeons continues to expand reconstructive offerings. The high-risk breast program provides individualized screening recommendations, lifestyle counseling, genetic evaluation, risk-reducing medication strategies, and prophylactic surgical options when indicated. The program is also home to one of the nation’s highest-volume chest masculinization practices, having performed more than 1,200 procedures since 2017.

Education remains central to the mission through the involvement of medical students, surgical residents, and a dedicated breast surgery fellowship.

The Gynecologic Oncology section has experienced substantial growth, increasing provider capacity by 50% while significantly expanding patient access. The team maintains referral-to-first-appointment times of approximately two weeks and continues to grow a robust clinical trials portfolio, including multiple Phase II and Phase III studies for gynecologic malignancies.

The Orthopedic Oncology section continues to expand with the addition of new faculty and enhanced research capabilities. The program is further strengthened by the integration of Dr. Steensma’s research laboratory into the Corewell Health cancer research program, fostering greater collaboration between clinical and translational research efforts.

Across all four sections, the Division of Surgical Oncology is dedicated to delivering exceptional cancer care while maintaining efficient access for patients. Equally important, Dr. Assifi is deeply committed to physician mentorship, leadership development, expanding research opportunities, and fostering a culture built on trust, collaboration, accountability, and open communication.

We believe in the importance of cancer prevention, which is why we have integrated screening tools into the care of patients as they access care with their primary care physicians. We have a robust survivorship program that is growing to include care before, during, and after cancer therapy.

Experiencing a cancer diagnosis is hard enough. We want patients and families to focus on healing and hope, which is why we are pleased to offer many resources to alleviate the challenges that often accompany a life-altering diagnosis. Patients can take advantage of sessions with an oncology clinical psychologist, get a massage to relief stress, or undergo acupuncture for painful neuropathy.  We also have a robust onco-fertility program to counsel patients about risk and arrange for fertility preservation. We even have an adolescent & young adult life specialist to address the unique needs of this population. Having these supportive services readily available allows you to focus on what you do best—providing exceptional cancer care—while knowing your patients and families are receiving comprehensive support every step of the way.

Patients like Bruce need us. That's why we need you.
